New Jersey Considering Mediation before Allowing Divorce

We’ve talked about how some states are requiring couples to attend sessions that explain the effects of divorce, but New Jersey may be taking it to a whole new level. They may require divorcing couples to go through mediation sessions first before they can legally divorce. Mediators says it saves the cost of divorce, but others see it as a legal hoop they have to jump through.

It is tough to say whether mediation before divorce is better. If a couple is already okay with the idea of splitting up, it may seem like an unnecessary step. In many cases, a collaborative divorce is better. Collaborative divorce can help couples deal with both the emotional side and the financial side of divorce with the help of experts. If both parties can come to an agreement, it can be much cheaper than a traditional divorce.
